Blind? - Not really :-)
Apart from a multi-directional infrared sensor, the robot has ultrasonic range detector, touch and mechanical shock sensors. All these allow the robot to sense the objects in front and around in more than one way simultaniously.
Additionally, 4-microphone system is used for detecting the direction to noise (claps, etc).
