Upacking tip I got from DansBallPythons, so I felt it appropriate to give him credit.

He uses roach barrier, I used Vaseline, but will be switching to a roach barrier instead, cause the Vaseline collects dust that may allow your T to climb, roach barrier won't. Just apply a very thin layer and wipe all around the sides and remove any excess residual so your Ts don't track any on there feet.

This method works great for unpacking tarantulas that tend to bolt as soon as you take the lid off when unpacking them. In the video I was unpacking some Pterinochilus murinus (Usumbara Baboon) "OBT's". They were very active and uncooperative. This also works great for taking pics of your tarantulas, They can walk freely or run like crazy while you photograph. Hope this helps and save someone a little agravation.

  • What happens if they get vaseline on their feets and then later starts too groom? isnt there big a risk that they will get vaseline in their mouth parts?

  • @JensTwn You asked this question before, so I'll answer again. There is not enough residue to cause any harm. I use a very thin layer food grade grease now instead of Vaseline, because the grease won't run under warm conditions. To date, I have never had a problem with any tarantula unpacked using this method. I don't see a problem. This is my opinion and observance of my tarantulas.

  • how did i miss this?

yeah, it's just something i came up with to unpack Poecilotheria, after one shot out of my bathtub and almost made it to the ceiling LOL.

it works for all fast and defensive Ts that like to run, i've never had one run out out of the containers, and i use a VERY small amout of bug stop. never had one problem and i've been doing this for almost a year now.

  • It sure came in handy when packing a 5"+ female H. lividum with and attitude a couple days ago. Great idea Dan.
