UN elects new General Assembly President

United Nations, New York, 10 June 2009 - The Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon has moved to congratulate His Excellency Ali Abdessalam Treky on his election to the post of President of the 64th session of the General Assembly.

As Mr Ban told the General Assembly, President Treky is not new to the United Nations. Various other diplomatic assignments have - in the past - placed him at the heart of the organisation's agenda.

In his current capacity as Libya's Minister of Africa Union affairs, he has been working on pressing matters of mutual concern to the United Nations and the African Union, including Darfur.
