I know Hendrix couldn't play like this is because I have every Hendrix record and have seen every video he ever made! Again I hate ignorant people! He could've maybe been able to play like this at some point with a lot of practice but seriously doubt it. Hendrix was a pioneer of rock guitar but music is made up of harmony, melody, rythym and Wes had a lot more going on than Jimi ever did. I still love Jimi though but no comparison to Wes... not even on the same planet!!

Why the constant need to compare? Nobody has 'surpassed" Wes- it's not a contest to see who places first. There is no first place. Why does everyone have to be better or worse than anyone else? That's for sports, not music....

Actually, it makes some sense to compare the two -- they both played by ear, and were outstanding musicians. But musically, there really isn't much point comparing, because while they played the same instrument, jazz and blues/rock are quite different. There are some musicians who do both, but usually not equally well. If you have to compare, compare Wes to Kenny Burrell, Grant Green, or George Benson, and compare Hendrix to Clapton, Page, or Beck.

Really, what is the point of the comparison here on youtube? Might as well compare Picasso and Monet, or The Simpsons and Happy Days, or apples and oranges. Needless to say, Bob Dylan spent as much time writing and learning to write songs as Miles Davis did practicing trumpet, and Jimi Hendrix spent just as much time doing what he did as Wes Montgomery. Who is supposed to sound like who, anyways? Same argument could be said that Wes could never sound like Hendrix. Doesn't matter. Enjoy the music

Do bear in mind that Jimi had HIS OWN EXPERIENCE to express through music - pun unintended - just as Wes's music is an expression of his. They had different approaches but crucially, each were able to express what they had inside of them in a beautiful way and to a high degree. Ultimately, that is what it's all about.
