Kata by Chinen Sensei ~ Part 1

1986 performance of Gekisai series and Kaishu kata by Chinen Sensei. Taped on a hot August day, Sensei wore the "original Okinawan gi."

I love the classical gojuryu kata, especially seiunchin. I study/teach isshinryu karatedo which incorporates both shorinryu and gojuryu concepts. We practice a modified version of seiunchin, but I must admit that the goju version is more aesthetically pleasing. My personal bunkai actually has the effect of making my interpretation of the kata closer to goju standards than many of my contemporaries. Osu!

@NewEnglandBudo -- HaHa. If I was going to train in a different style of karate it would most definitely be gojuryu. But I'm very happy within the isshinryu system. Still, I consider ALL practitioners of traditional Okinawan karate-do to be a part of my family. Osu!

Yes, there is an Okinawan saying "Ichariba Chode" which means, Once we meet we are brothers/ sisters forever!

seiyuchin is such a great kata. one of my favorites.

LOL, He did the entire kata the first time mirror image. Then the second time, he did the kata correctly.
