Rosenthal was amongst Liszt's most brilliant students.

His recordings all come toward the end of his career, when his early fire and power had mellowed into a spirit of deep poetry. His playing is probably the most "colourful" of the Liszt students who recorded, with a command of keyboard tone and subtle chordal voicings of wonderful precision and perfectly nuanced shaping. His use of rubato is also sometimes very "19th century" but always absolutely compelling and never merely mannered.

This recording of the first movement from the Chopin's first piano concerto in E minor op. 11 dates from 1930/31. (more)

  • This intriguing blast from the past seems to say that this pianist had plenty of technique but he was hardly interested in showing it off, mostly they are preoccupied with expressiveness inherent in the music. The audience was presumably more conditioned to pick up nuances, and their rubato, especially. Hard to say much about the play in the dynamics, but the consistent tone control comes through.

  • Thank you
