MESSENGER OF DEATH is not a specific character from Greek Drama but was created by Martha Graham to create an atmosphere of foreboding and inevitability. This abstract figure can represent many things: Fate, Fear, Guilt, Inevitability, Karma, etc.

In this solo, the Messenger of Death sets the tone for Grahams telling of the Agamemnon saga in Clytemnestra.

For the first time Martha Graham Dance Company is giving you a chance to ReMash Graham history.

When Martha Graham's Clytemnestra premiered in 1958 it became an instant hit, so it's no surprise that its 2008 revival has followed in its footsteps.

So why stop there? Why not discover 21st century parallels to this Ancient Greek Graham classic.

And why don't you discover them for us?

We have posted five videos online for you to remix, just like the master herself. Each video depicts a character from Trojan War.

You can choose from Helen of Troy, Electra, Clytemnestra, Cassandra, or a more abstract character the Messenger of Death.

Choose one of the characters, take that video, and rework it (remix it, remash it, remaster it, whatever).

Create a modern twist on these ancient characters through current pop culture news, personalities or events.

The possibilities are endless: recast a character in contemporary style, change the music, add a background, learn the movement, develop your own group variation, place your character of choice in another dramatic or cultural context,

The winning video will be featured live at one of our upcoming performances.

The competition opens on February 1st, 2009 and the submissions deadline is March 31, 2009. Winners will be announced on May 11, 2009.

This is the very beginning of the piece, in which Clytemnenstra is being brought back to world of the living to retell the story of betrayal, revenge, and murder. Wonderful scene.

Beautifully done. I saw this ballet in 1957, the year it premiered on Broadway. It was the first work of Graham's I ever saw. I still remember how riveting David Wood was when he created this stunning role.

Nevertheless, this dancer is superb; he so catches the intensity. It is wonderful to see these videos of all these great Graham dances and see new dancers in the roles I so vividly remember. A visual feast!
