A very young and largely inexperienced twenty-one year old Plácido Domingo sings the first act duet of Donizetti's opera Lucia di Lammermoor in a performance from November 26, 1962 in Fort Worth, Texas. His co-star, the great French coloratura soprano Lily Pons, was nearing the end of her career at the time.

The first photo of Domingo is from 1974; the second from 1972.

Can't believe these two pieces exist! I was AT this performance with my mother -- my first opera, when I was 12 years old! Had no idea until just now that I was also seeing Domingo!!! Amazing! I remember Pons in the Mad Scene, though -- knew I was seeing something very special. Thanks so much for this!

Amazing indeed! Taking into consideration that Pons was born 1898, she must have been 64 years young!

Lily's voice was well-preserved.. Not only was she a splendid coloratura, but she sang for our troops and was a great patriot.

Pons sang on right nearly to the end. She appeared on Merv Griffin's T.V. show and sang beautifully, with the just the smallest shakiness. She was by then living in Texas and still active in the opera community, always looked perfect and was as ever intelligent and charming and could be very witty. You can hear here by Domingo was from the start a sensation. But from all accounts the age difference here just didn't matter.

What a duet! A 20 years old against a 50 years old!! But he did never sing together with Callas. What a pity.
