Author Anna Jane Grossman shows us the joys of using pay phones on 3rd Ave. in New York City--and she provides the quarters. http://www.iamobsolete.net
It is amazing how many pay phones have been removed in the period from 2000 to 2010. The cell phone revolution has made the pay phone obsolete. However, there is one thing that the pay phones were better at is that they did not allow interruptions at the table, in movie theaters, in meetings, etc because they were not mobile and located in places where interruptions are not a problem.
Payphones aren't obsolete, what if your beloved cellphone breaks or runs out of juice and you're stranded? Unless you got a rack of tits, no ones letting you use their cell phone
LOL...."PAY"--Phones......I can remember "Pay-Toilets" where if you did not have a dime you could not use the bathroom stalls.......you just pee'd your pants and lived with it
Payphones are slowly disappearing from my town... (sigh) :-( Thank you SO much for posting this tribute to an American icon! In fact, I still like to use a payphone now and again, just to relive my childhood memories of playing around with them. Also, there are 4 phone booths (yes, BOOTHS) left in NYC. You can find them by going to the Payphone Project website.
Hey don't laugh. In the rural and mountainous areas of California there are towns that have no cell signals whatsoever. I frequent one of those towns and I bought a calling card that I use sometimes with a payphone because that's the only way to call from that town!
