That is ridiculous. An athlete will start losing their fitness without 3 days of working out. you can easily lose your fitness in 2 years, even 6 months. For a job like this that REQUIRES you to be fit and capable, 2 years isn't that much to ask.

@Matt, exactly bro. They're constantly in the middle of action working their bodies, and when they're not they're usually doing events, working out, or at least doing something to hone their skills even more. It is pretty demanding. It's not like once you become a firefighter you sit on your lazy ass all day waiting for the next fitness test to come along.

is this an requirement for FDNY as well? Every two years a fitness exam?

@californiarednek Excellent to hear then man. With that recent review stating more obesity in fire service then gen population, its always good to know that we got guys out there going that extra mile so we have less LODDs. Congratz on getting on!

@twit101 I am in shape. My local dept does have a fitness test, and it looks like I am going to get on. I can't imagine it was going to be as difficult as the CPAT but I was wondering if there was some sort of standard. Guess not.

@californiarednek depends, some dont REQUIRE a fitness test, however, at the same time, if you are out of shape, this is not the job for you.

I don't think this test is indicative of all firefighter tests in the US. Here in Minnesota, the firefighters always manage to save the basement and you can always find the engine parked at a Subway.
