Blanca - Requiem

Shortly after being invited to choreograph for the NY Theatrical Bellydance Conference at the beginning of 2011, I was told that my mom might be suffering from pancreatic cancer. I was only able to find inspiration and get the job done by tuning into my feelings about my mother's mortality.

Ethereal and romantic, my mom did not belong on Earth. She was a martyr and a victim—too innocent and idealistic for this harsh world. This music feels so much like her.

I didn't know it at the time, but her favorite blessing was Irish:

"May the road rise up to meet you
May the wind always be at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
The rains fall soft upon your fields
And until we meet again
May God hold you in the palm of his hand."

I now carry with me a card that has these words handwritten by her. She passed away on November 24.
