Pursued relentlessly by the U.S. Army two centuries ago, Florida's Indian tribes developed a new form of housing to provide them refuge and shelter from both weather and bullets. Today, chickees, distinctive in their thatched palmetto roofs and lack of walls, offer shade and ambience to modern Floridians and visitors alike. What was once a survival tool for life in old Florida's swamps is now a luxury toy at homes, resorts and clubhouses across the state.
