I'm suprised that someone agrees with me. The two guys who I think can do this justice are Alun, of course, and Barry James.

The Thenardier's = foils to Javert's Old Testament "Eye-for-an-Eye" justice and Valjean's New Testament mercy/forgiveness. They are, through and through, despicable and horrible scoundrels (but they make out like bandits when it's all said and done). The funny thing is, most of us love them for it. I guess sometimes it's fun to root for the villains, especially when their songs are so good ;D

I don't really understand how anyone can compare Matt Lucas to Alun Armstrong. Armstrong is an actor and a singer and plays this role to perfection, Lucas is a one trick pony who who can do 'quirky' but never goes beyond comedy. For instance, try and get Lucas to manage the sarcasm and hate-filled expressions Armstrong does at 1:43 when referencing god - that's crucial to showing that Thernardier isn't all jokes. Also, check the rogue-ish posturing from 2:03, that's pure theater.

Yes, I think this song is required to show the darker side of the character. I doubt Cohen could have done it, to be honest.
