George Butterworth (1885-1916)
George Butterworth was born on July 12, 1885 in London. He was a vital figure in the folksong and folkdance movement (circa 1906) and its creative outgrowth through both his own music and his friendship with Ralph Vaughan Williams. Butterworth was killed in action during the First World War. "Is My Team Ploughing?" is a dialogue between a man and his dead friend. The dynamic contrast helps distinguish between the two voices.
