The supreme interpreter of Prince Yeletsky in Pique Dame, in my opinion: Soviet baritone Pavel Lisitsian. What a fantastic lyric baritone voice...sorry Hvorostovsky fans, his Yeletsky is good, but isn't in the same league as Lisitian's. In fact, from what I've heard, Hvorostovsky was a personal friend of Lisitian, and one can hear certain similarities in their singing style.
Pity this man was not as well known in the western world as he should have been.

  • How can you compare Hvorostovsky to this beauty??

  • Is this from the complete recording conducted by Melik-Pashaiev, or a later recording? In any event, it is magnificent. Lisa was a fool not to fall for Yeletsky after hearing this!

  • Such a wonderful singer... a pity the world was not given the chance to experience during his prime... I feel very much the same about Vishnevskaya.

  • Beautiful baritone. Henry Fogel just did a retrospective on Lisitsian this evening on WFMT network. Heard some great singing there, also!

  • Mazurock is no piker either.

  • superior to hvorovstovsky's luke warm faked impassioned renditions.

  • @Natalotos Да, это и я заметила.

  • @Fallout06 Seeing as" this beauty" (Lisitian) may well have been Hvorostovski's role model - very well indeed! :-)

  • @Ettoredipugnar I agre! Dh is brilliant as well, I'd say Pl=L was his role model :-))

  • @Fallout06 You can't : )

  • Последнее время последние слова арии поют: "О милая, доверьтесь мне".

  • Ever since first heard Hvorostovsky sing this at Cardiff Singer of the world, I've been a fan of his, although I think he sings less well these days. But Pavel Lisitsian leaves H at the starting post. Listen to the way he ascends to a perfect top G, and THEN goes to the whole of the next phrase without a breath!! Phenomenal.
