Continental Flight 3407 crashed late into a house in Clarence Centre, while heading to Buffalo, New York just kilometres away from Newark in New Jersey.

Investigators have found the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder from the plane, a National Transportation Safety Board spokesman said.

"They have been found and they are on their way back here," NTSB spokesman Ted Lopatkiewicz said, adding they were expected to arrive by early afternoon.

He said it was unclear how long it would take experts to glean information from the black boxes.

"That depends on what condition they are in," he said.

Rescue teams were still battling to douse a raging firestorm burning hours after the accident.

Smouldering jet fuel at the scene outside Buffalo threw up walls of intense heat more than 12 hours afterwards.

Investigators admitted they had no clue why the flight from Newark, New Jersey to Buffalo suddenly fell out the skies with no warning.

One person in the house was killed and US media reported that two other people inside escaped with minor injuries - Karen Wielinski, 57, and her daughter, Jill, 22.
