Poor shifting on a bicycle's rear derailleur is typically a result of improper cable tension, and this can be checked by starting from the highest gear. Manually adjust cable tension without the use of tools by following the advice of a former BMX and collegiate racer in this free bicycle repair video.

My bike shifts nicely to a larger gear, but when I want to go faster, it doesn't shift to a smaller gear. I have to shift two up, and then back one down to get the gear I want. As you can imagine, this is not ideal. Any suggestions as to why it is doing this?
