Did Faith have parents in China or was she from a Chinese adoption Clinic?
-
@zomgnoesway I've come to terms with the mother, she actually did a great job: her parenting is what's best for Faith. Although we would like to see her preserve her Chinese heritage as much as possible, she is entering a different world at a late age and in order for her to one day become a successful independent American, she needed to be westernized in a radical fashion. It's tragic, but it's for the best and Stephanie Wang-Breal did an excellent job of showcasing this.

@donnat Of course there are not that many foreign adoptions each year, but foreign adoptions are only part of the child trafficking problem. Abducted boys are usually sold to wealthy Chinese that "need" as son. Orphanages know which baby brokers bring them abducted babies, and they make it a priority to sell these children overseas. In recent years, the authorities have been tracking down more abducted babies, so a very high percentage of foreign adoptions are abducted babies.
-
@cynsmi This is true. Orphanages in China often don't allow domestic adoptions because they can make so much more money selling children to foreigners. Orphanages make about $700 US from domestic adoptions, but abotu $3,000 for foreign adoptions. When selling any product, it makes sense to sell to the highest bidder.

Tens of thousands? You do realize that there isn't anywhere near that many Chinese children adopted each year, right? And the majority of International Adoptions are Special Needs now. Are you implying that disabled kids are being abducted and sold to orphanages?

@SteveI72 This. And I cannot even fathom changing the given name of a girl that old. As if her life isn't going to be disorienting enough.

@meiling04 I agree and the movie said she is taking Chinese lessons. Apparently Faith and his foster parents in China do speak via computer and a future trip back is planned. One point is her life in China may not have been as successful as the new life in America promises. You look at most Americans and must realize we have all lost that contact with our countries of orgin. Life is never perfect for anyone.

@straightjacket510 True. I still find it horrible beyond words that any child has to give up her culture/language/family to contest against the possibility of being socially shunned or physically dead.
-
@cynsmi But I heard Faith has lost all ability to communicate with her foster family. You can have all the love in the world and not be able to feel it through communication.
I saw the documentary and she was absolutely precious. Couldn't stand the mother, though.
