  • Hi Davie, great fly how long does the tail last when catching fish and who supplies your feathers they look superb and expensive? cheers Alan.

  • Hi Alan (skipperfox007),

The marabou tail will last a few fish much like the other materials on the fly if you allow the fly to dry after using it, it will last much longer. I bought the feathers from the Glasgow Angling Center but the Marabou I washed and cleaned before I used it this will always make your fly look and swim much better.

I appreciate all you kind comments, thankyou...

    All the best Davie

  • @DavieMcPhail Many thanks for your reply i have only just started fly fishing and tying so i appreciate your advice over the last 3 years i have been struggling with cancer and i'm finding the tying of flies very theraputic and watching your videos have blown me away i watched the salmon fly video you made, works of art, those feathers were beautifull? please keep up the good work and thanks again for answering my query i realise you must be swamped with emails, many thanks Alan.

  • Hi Alan,

I'm very sorry to hear about your illness and I'm very happy that in some way these videos help you.. Like you said tying flies is a great way of relaxing and then to see what you have come up with makes you want to go out and have a days fishing in which you don't need me to tell you is a wonderful way to spend your time even if the fish are not taking..

Email me anytime if I can help you...

    All the best Davie

  • @DavieMcPhail Hi davie, one of my neighbours was brushing her dog it is an alsation the fur is lovely and soft and i was wondering if it could be used for the bodies of flies until i can afford the best, i'm trying to experiment with anything i can find i have the basics and the flies i have tied i've actually caught fish but if its no good i dont't want to waste my supplies? thanks again for your replies it gives me a goal to aim for. cheers Alan

  • Hi Alan,

Most fur is very good for dubbing especiallly the sofrt underfur which sounds like what you have, you will find it easy to use and I'm sure it will catch you many more fish..

    All the best Davie

How do you clean the feathers? Is it just lukewarm water and some squeezy washing up liquid?
