The Palace of Versailles, 20 km southwest of Paris, was the center of political power in France from 1682, when Louis XIV ("Sun King") moved from Paris, to
1789 after the beginning of the French Revolution. UNESCO listed the glittering palace and its gardens a World Heritage site in 1979. The entire estate covers 2,000 acres with 50 acres of formal gardens, tree-lined paths, flowerbeds, lakes and fountains.
Built at enormous cost by over 30,000 laborers, the palace contains grand halls and bedrooms lavishly decorated by the interior designer Charles Le Brun and filled with paintings, sculptures, velvet draperies, carpets, gilded bronze and tinted marble.
Most spectacular of all is the Hall of Mirrors, a 235-foot-long drawing and ballroom, lined with 17 huge mirrors which reflect the ceiling frescoes. The
Treaty of Versailles that ended World War I was signed in the Hall of Mirrors in 1919. The hall is flanked by the Salon of Peace and the Salon of War.
In the Royal Chapel, Louis XVI married Marie Antoinette in 1770. Mozart performed at age seven in the Clock Room.The French Revolution's mobs marched on Versailles and carried Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI to Paris in 1789 and they were led to the guillotine in 1793,
