Giving Xanax to the chimp was the same as giving him alcohol. Some people relax when they drink alcohol. Others just want to fight. Xanax seems to have had the later effect on the chimp. It was reckless as all bloody hell.
The owner, may she rot in hell, should have called animal control and not her friend. The end result would have been the same--chimp being killed. But at least her "friend" wouldn't have been mauled.

Have you ever taken Xanax? It fucks with your head, and as humans we're able to cope with that because we know we're on medication. This chimpanzee must have just went crazy when he took it (and it seems he definitely did).
