I think Steve Martin's real forte was intelligent type of comedy, like the kind he displayed for a while in films like Roxanne (which he wrote the screenplay for) or Planes, Trains and Automobiles (in which he was actually the heavy). I think people's impression of Martin kind of got tainted in the more recent years when he sort of reverted back to the "easy laugh" type of movies like the Pink Panther remake, stuff that feels kind of lame in comparison. But make no mistake, the guy is talented.
