A very simple way to incorporate some odd times into your riff writing is to use repeating patterns. Playing in 5/8 we can create accented patterns based on the note grouping (3+2 or 2+3). You'll find these patterns used ad nauseam in Progressive Metal/Rock songs.

  • you live in ny by any chance? i want to work with you...that was a sick riff..i love tool and been playing for over 20 years and have played in very technical bands where 4/4 was odd timing for us..so let me know lol
