Well, I have to say, that Fratianne never impressed me , she never once looked up at the audience and her style wasnt memorable. Even Allen, Lenz and Rugh had much better style than she did. I understand Allen's frustration. Her SP was much better than Fratianne's and honestly, her Artisic IMpression was way better than Fraitanne. I think its pretty horrendous that the judges held up Hill here over Allen. I understand Zayak winning, but Allen deserved second.

During the 1980 season, Allen had grown quite vocal about USFSA treating her unfairly while unequivocally favoring Fratianne. I totally think "they" got back at Allen at 1981 Nationals by holding her down in CF as well as in SP/FS. By the way, the way Allen spoke about the issue was, at times, quite tacky and almost delusional (e.g., "Everybody knows I should have won the Nationals for the last 3 years!")...

HOW??????????????????? Did they keep her in the top two? It is criminal that such a weak performance was placed over Lisa Marie Allen. This is very unfair

She has little connection with the audience. She seems robotic and stiff. Good coach though.

@aelred123 That's correct--partly. As long as a country had one skater who placed in the top 5, it could send 3 skaters the following year--given that this "top finisher" of the nation competed that following year (hence only 2 US spots @ 81 Worlds). If the top finisher places between 6th and 10th, they could send 2 skaters w/ the same restriction.

Hmm, I know that in the 90s that if one of your skaters dropped out of the top 10, then you lost a berth. I think Peppe201 explained to me that back then, the three berths included the medalist from the year before, if they didnt go, then the berth was lost.

What a nice young lady she was--after having skated poorly to be responding w/ dignity.
Hill was the Zayak of the late 1970s, with consistent triples (sal, toe, and sometimes loop), which was unusual back then. But she often choked at major competitions. After the melt down at Worlds in 78, she couldn't even go to the Worlds for two years in a row. So, I think the judges wanted to give her a little push here, perhaps, because she didn't retire after failing to make the Olympic team...

I cant believe the judges gave her the nod over Lisa Marie Allen and Sandy Lenz. She was a great coach, but really not a very impressive free skater, and I disliked how she dropped her free leg on the landings, it looked so sloppy and tired
