great project. standing the wood end grain would have been a more sustainable way to build it though considering this is going to be a built in feature of the home. Butcher block conditioner is also an excellent addition to any cutting surfacee. The Beeswax in butcher block conditioner really helps protect and seal your wood cutting surface.

excellent project. i just ripped out a bunch of bellawood solid maple. but the aluminum oxide coating they use scares me. you turned the pieces sideways correct?
