Mozart - piano sonata no. 14 in C minor KV 457.
Movement 2. ADAGIO CANTABILE
pf. Vadim Chaimovich

Relation to Beethoven's "Pathétique"

Of this sonata Köchel said "Without question this is the most important of all Mozart's pianoforte sonatas. Surpassing all the others by reason of the fire and passion which, to its last note, breathe through it, it foreshadows the pianoforte sonata, as it was destined to become in the hands of Beethoven."

Indeed, Mozart's sonata feels in several ways prophetic of Beethoven's great C minor sonata Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, "Pathétique" (which it predates by roughly fifteen years), and both works share a similar overall plan. Listeners will note that Mozart's theme in his spacious second movement is remarkably similar to that which Beethoven used in his own "Adagio cantabile" second movement.

  • definately the second movement in there around 3:27.. it just doesnt resolve to the 5 chord like beethoven does in the pathetique

  • ya v etom qodu budu etu sonatu iqrat mne udachi :D

  • is that same thing with moonlight sonata?

  • @SirSebastianWang he most likely was. remeber that bethoven was obbsesed whit mozart, or his father was anyway, and bethoven was actually going to go and learn of mozart, but he died only 2 weeks after he agreed to take him as an apprentice..

  • @SirSebastianWang well, mozart was dead when bethoven wrote pathetique sonata, so it is clearly where he got his inspiration

  • @SirSebastianWang wasnt mozart dead when he worte pathetique sonate....

  • The second theme is remarkably similar to L.van Beethoven's piano sonata no.8 in C minor, although it's not clear whether he was familiar with this piece before writing the Pathétique Sonata.

  • Holy shit that one part literally IS Beethoven's theme for his Pathetique sonata's 2nd mvt. that gave me chills.
