Students in Europe are highly critical of the purchasing policies of universities of research and universities of applied sciences. They are demanding that ICT is purchased sustainably and fairly by the institutions at which they are studying. They are campaigning against the poor working conditions in the electronics industry in low-wage countries. Students from all parts of the Netherlands came together at the University of Utrecht. They were supported by inspiratrice Gerry (ambassadrice for fair chains), one of the StoereVrouwen, JMA (young environmental activists) and representatives of the European 'Procure IT Fair'- campaign. Together they made this university shake and caused a real 'Shake-up call' to awaken higher education in the Netherlands for this important matter.
Paul Doop, representative of the VSNU and the HBO-raad (the umbrella organisations of the universities and the universities of applied sciences, respectively) and vice-chairman of the Board of Directors of the University of Amsterdam / Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, was presented a petition signed by thousands of students from all over Europe. Mr. Doop said that as a result of this campaign, universities and universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands who are procuring new IT will also ask for working conditions in computer production.
Professor Jacqueline Cramer supports this action of the students. When she was minister she was responsible for sustainable procurement and also now as a professor of sustainable innovations she is involved in this. Together with the students she also want manufacturers to provide more chain transparency and meet the demand for fair ICT. And also professor Cramer seemed still loose in her hips for a real Shake-Up Call!
