I agree with this 100%. The essential lateral move already happened before starting the down swing. Lateral move is crucial but it also create lots of movement. There is less moving parts in Hogan's on the down swing. All that has to happen on the down swing is to hit the ball by turning the hip.
I said Hogan was wrong because in 5 Lessons he speaks alot about turning/spinning the hips as a start of the downswing (despite whatever any revisionist would claim these days).
You should def. slide hips more than spin them. Spinning them is an ensured disaster, and will make anyone come over the top. A sliding hip will turn naturally (it can't do anything but this), get your weight over, and give your upper body/arms a chance to stay on the inside, including getting you club in a nice hit position for your irons (hands well infront of ball). Don't *ever* start your downswing with the spin of your hips!! Hogan was WRONG about this!
Hey, you need to go back and reread the 5 Lessons where he says to get lateral movement of the hips. Its really a combined move and he does describe it well. Get out the highlighter. So much info in such a short book.
Mr. Jim McLean is right; Mr Hogan does state that THERE HAS TO BE ENOUGH LATERAL MOTION FORWARD TO TRANSFER THE WEIGHT TO THE LEFT FOOT (pg. 90 Five Lessons). However, he doesn't state when this should occur only that it must happen prior to turning the hips to start the downswing
