Claire's Law Tracks Shaken Baby Syndrome Cases

Ohio will become one of the first states in the nation to track the devastating cases of Shaken Baby Syndrome.

On Thursday night a reception was held to honor a local nine-year-old survivor of Shaken Baby Syndrome -- and whose case helped create "Claire's Law."

It was eight years ago on Thursday when Claire Fishpaw, of Montgomery, was severely shaken by her babysitter as a baby.

Her mother says that one incident has changed her daughter's life forever.

On Thursday night hundreds of people gathered at an Indian Hill home to honor Claire and the law in her name that may help protect other children from the disabling and even deadly form of child abuse.

Her mother Michelle showed 9News pictures of Claire that illustrated how her encounter with Shaken Baby Syndrome changed her from an outgoing, normal baby, to one with many developmental and emotional challenges.

The Fishpaws and their supporters hope that Ohio's new Shaken Baby Syndrome tracking law will finally tell us how common the problem has become.

Thursday night's reception also honored State Senator Steve Stivers work in getting Claire's Law through the state legislature.

But the Fishpaw's view it as much more.

"This is one of our dreams come true," said Claire's mother, Michelle Fishpaw.

While Claire's Law won't help Claire Fishpaw, her parents hope it will keep more Ohio children from dying or being injured by being violently shaken.
