www.EmploymentCrossing.com A new $15 million seed corn production facility in Hermiston, Oregon is expected to bring about 15 full-time jobs to the city, as well as provide contracts for local farmers. Delaware-based chemical conglomerate DuPont announced that its subsidiary Pioneer Hi-Bred recently bought 40 acres, and plans to open the facility in fall 2009 to meet a growing demand for seed. "The ag business there is really very good," said Frank Lynch of Iowa-based Pioneer. "Dry weather means less insect issues and less diseases." Along with the full-time employees, the plant also will need 40 to 50 seasonal workers and seven or eight part-time employees. Production in Hermiston will start with about 1,000 acres of seed corn, which will be contracted with local farmers. Eventually that number will ramp up to 3,000 acres and might include land in the Tri-City, Oregon area. Hermiston has a population of 15,000. Pioneer produces more than 250 corn hybrids and has a presence in nearly 70 countries.
