My Other Half - Chapter 63

Joe's POV

I'm scared for her. For Demi, I mean. I don't know how she's holding up with the crap this Jeff guy is putting her through. Part of me understands why she won't tell her mom about Jeff but the other part of me wants to just tell everything to Diana. There are so many things that could go wrong if someone tells Diana but what's going to happen if Jeff just continues what he's doing? I can't let that happen. I need to find a way to get Diana to see it for herself; she's got to believe it. I feel Demi's grip tighten on my hand and I look down at her. She just softly smiles up at me as we wait in line. We slowly move up and eventually we order then take a seat in a booth, across from each other. It's quiet for a few minutes as we eat our yogurt. Demi puts her half-eaten yogurt down and shivers. I look up at her.
"Demi, can you do me a favor?" I whisper. She looks at me and nods slowly. "Can you at least try to stay away from Jeff tomorrow? Do the best you can to avoid him,"
"Why can't I just stay with you at your house?" Demi wonders. I sigh.
"I won't be there," I tell her.
"What? Why?" she asks.
"We're flying to New York early tomorrow morning,"
"What am I gonna do?" Demi starts to worry.
"Demi. Demi, listen to me. You'll be fine as long as you stay away from Jeff," I assure her. "If he comes near you, you get the hell out of there and drive to Sel's or even Dani's or Miley's. I don't want you to get hurt." Demi purses her lips and nods.
"When are you coming back?" she asks, her voice cracking.
"Late Tuesday night," I tell her. Demi looks down at her hands. I get up and move to sit on the bench next to her. "I'll be back before you know it, I promise."
"Things shouldn't be like this," she whispers. My eyebrows knit together in confusion. "I shouldn't be afraid to go to my own house."
"We'll get this all straightened out soon enough," I tell Demi.

Demi's POV

I roll over in my own bed, late Monday morning. I grab my phone and see that I have a text message:
Good morning. Please be careful
-Joe
I reach up to run my finger along my tingling lips as I remember the small, soft kiss Joe left me with last night when he dropped me off at my house. I hear a noise downstairs so I climb out of bed and I get dressed in jeans and a sweatshirt and I quietly go down the stairs. I slowly peek around the corner to the kitchen where I see my mom, alone. I sigh and walk in.
"Morning, baby," she says.
"Hey, Mom,"
"Listen, I've got to head out for a little bit for an appointment but I'll be back soon. There's some leftover pizza in the fridge if you want that for lunch," my mom explains. I nod.
"Okay," I follow her to the front hall.
"Oh, I almost forgot, Jeff will be here really soon. Offer him some lunch. Love you," my mom rushes out the door.
"Love you too," I say quietly.

My headphones were in, blasting music in my ears while I waited for what was to come. The tv was on but I couldn't hear it. I must've not heard the car pull up in the driveway and I must've not heard the door open and close. That's probably why I almost had a heart attack when my headphones were ripped out of my ears. Jeff pulled me up off the couch and grabbed my arms, holding me in front of him.
"You were spying on me. You and that boyfriend of yours," he spits angrily at me.
"He's not my boyfriend and we weren't spying on you," I tell him sternly.
"I suppose you're going to try and tell me it was a complete coincidence that you came to my town and came to the same restaurant I was going to?" Jeff growls.
"But it was!" I cry. Jeff's hands tighten their grip on my arms. The next words just spill out of my mouth, "Why are you cheating on my mom?" Jeff pushes me against the wall and he glares down into my eyes.
"You will never speak of that to anybody, ever," he says through clenched teeth. My lip starts to quiver and when I don't say anything, he jerks me back against the wall. "Is that clear!?" I nod, squishing my eyes closed, tears leaking out. Jeff pulls me away from the wall then pushes me. I stumble back into a side table, knocking it over, my body tumbling down on top of it. The vase that was resting on the table smashes just before I hit the ground myself. I can't tell what hurts the most right now; my arms, my back, my head. I lie motionless on the floor for a minute, listening to Jeff's footsteps fade. When I open my eyes, there's a small trail of blood in front of me. Then everything goes black.
