  • Yeah the airbase and the railroad still exist. Infact the AIR FORCE station is one of the important one of IAF and has the latest jet fighter sircraft SUKHOI stationed there.

  • I was really surprised to get any response, but I appreciate it! I do not recognize any of the scenes of present-day Tezpur.

  • @Pyandkatie I was a PFC stationed at the Tezpur air base fro about 1 year, then transferred to ATC HQ near Calcutta. I did not fly nor was I in any ground crew. I did not know any of the flying staff. We lived in concrete-floored 6-man shacks called Bashas on wood frames strung with ropes. Thatched roofs. Food was from the US except for water buffalo milk. Remember hot, humid summers with torrential Monsoon rains. I regret I can't tell you very much else. Best regards!

Hello: My uncle Carl Paxton Dunaway was a pilot stationed in Tezpur flying cargo to Kumming. He was flying a B-24 on August 28, 1944 when the plane hit a mountain just short of Kumming. His crew was Joseph J. Skully, Bruce Q. Davis and Richard H.. Ellerbe.

Would you be willing to share any of your memories about the airbase since it seems that you were there at the same time as my uncle. I would appreciate it very much!

  • In 1943 and 1944 I was in the US Army Air Force stationed at our airbase in Tezpur!

I was just 19 years old. We could walk from our base to a Chinese Restaurant near our base! Could also walk or ride to the town itself. There was a small railroad to Tezpur with half-size Hudson-type locomotives to bring supplies to the base. Our aircraft flew supplies over the "Hump" northern mountains in Burma to China. Good memories!. Does the airbase or railroad still exist?
