This is as short introductory video of the new 'Mamod Train', to prove to the "Doubting Thomas's" that this loco actually does run straight out of the box. On its 1st run it achieved light engine running followed by pulling 1 open wagon. On the 2nd run it pulled 2 open wagons, and on the 3rd run it pulled these 2 open wagons for 15 minutes before the water level reached the minimum level. After getting some batteries for my camera you see it in action here on its 4th run. An old SL loco or the current MSS solid fuel locos would be well pushed to achieve similar running straight out of the box!

These were originally only available direct from Mamod at a special introductory price of £169.50, which was a real bargain for a gas fired loco. Now available from 2 dealers online as well.

See here for more details - http://www.mamod.co.uk/video.asp

With the introduction of the improved New Mamod Locomotive Mark II, Mamod have renamed this loco so this video's title has been changed accordingly.

This locomotive was designed by Peter Johnstom.

  • Looks like some nice improvements on the old version but also some negative points too, i.e. the appearance! Ugly looking thing. I see it still has the famous Mamod characteristic of running like a rocket! I thought the regulator would allow some control over the speed? Or is that not the case? I'm half tempted to get one but I'm still not totally convinced.

  • This was the loco's 4th run and it was difficult to set-up a video and achieve slow running from a standing start whilst on camera. The loco is now well run-in and can run at very slow speeds now. Have read elsewhere online that Mamod are going to fit it with an inline lubricator

  • No lubricator- the cylinders are going to last for around 30 minutes after that steam will start to blow past the pistons. If you do get one of these (dont) please get a lubricator and an O ring kit will give you more power and and will save the inevitable tears.

  • Easy enough to suck steam oil into the cylinders through the exhaust steam pipe before each run.

Currently it is only sold by Mamod direct so no after market enhancements available yet.

  • The boiler, regulator and burner are an improvement but the chassis has too many cheap rivets and appears to be made from very thin metal,Why the difference in size,it should be the same size as the others,no spectacle rings look odd, though I assume they are working to a budget on this, there is room for hundreds of improvements,I must get one of these and soup it up!

  • As explained in the video the method used to mount the wheels stops the wobbly wheel syndrome that the SL range suffered from.

  • Trains are good, stationary engines are what I prefer.

  • @ChrisCairns59 Thanks for the reply. In that case I might well have to get one myself, maybe wait until the newest version comes out with the lubricator. Superb review by the way.

  • Great Video and lesson. I bought a Jubilee, but am very disappointed. I think money would have been better spent on an Accucraft Ruby or Rounhouse. The money I need to spend to get this Mamod to run like a Ruby is double the price of a Ruby. I have several Guage 1 live steam and find this Mamod a poor excuse

  • that box isnt very good, plenty of room to move around and get damaged

  • Exhaust steam out of the chimney would need a through pipe soldered into the boiler before fitting the dummy chimney. A cost saving measure I assume.

No lubricator fitting to any Mamods now with oscillating cylinders, even the old SL range did not have one.
