Lebanon PA 10/25/09: Pastor Tanner welcomed everyone to the 250th Anniversary service of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, which was founded in 1760. Tanner also delivered a children's message and served communion with the assistance of Pastor Roger Bucy. Bishop Hoover delivered the sermon, partially in the original German of our ancestors. Bible readings included: Jeremiah 31:31-34; Psalm 46; Romans 3:19-28; and John 8:31-36.
Afterwards during a luncheon, Patricia Shedlock made introductions. Accompanied by Hans Gartner on the piano, Louise Pouss and Robert Hunter led the congregation in singing Edelweiss. Happy Birthday was also sung in German, "Froelich Geburtstag to you! Froelich Geburtstag to you! Froelich Geburtstag dear Salem! Froelich Geburtstag to you! " Proclamations were received from US Congressman Holden, US Senator Casey, PA Governor Rendell, PA Senator Folmer, PA Representatives Swanger and Gingrich, and Lebanon County Commissioners Stohler, Carpenter, and Litz. Debra Gates presented a proclamation on behalf of City Mayor Trish Ward.
I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. Today (October 30, Reformation Sunday), Romans 3:19-28 was our New Testament Lesson (or Epistle) of the Day.
