Youre either about to, or have recently seen the address by President Barack Obama. In our system of government, when the president addresses the nation, there is usually a chance for a counter-address or a differing point of view. Since theres no such opportunity in this instance, Id like to offer a few words that I hope will put in to context the position of those like myself who didnt vote for Barack Obama, and dont agree with his policies.

First of all, let me say that Barack Obama is my president. While I may not have supported him in the election, and may not agree with his policies, he is the duly-elected president of the United States, and that means hes my president and your president. I dont think he stole the election, and I dont buy into the fringe notion that hes not a US Citizen. Hes the president, the leader of the nation, and the commander in chief of our military forces. While people may have differing views on his judgements, I urge you all to have respect for the office, listen to what is being put forth, and always respond in a polite and thoughtful manner.

Id also like to point out that, while I believe that most of President Obamas policies are wrong for America, I dont think hes evil, corrupt, disingenuous, stupid, or a bad man. From what I can tell he loves his family and loves his country, and sincerely believes hes doing what he considers is the best course of action. Most Republicans I know have nothing again President Obama personally, and would be as vociferously against the same policies were they to come from any other president, regardless of race, gender, or even political party. I include that last item because there were many policies of the former Republican administration that I, and many other conservatives, disagreed with, which is what led, I believe, to the Republican losses in the House, Senate, and White House over the second half of George Bushs term.

Rather than spend my remaining time talking about individual issues, let me try to offer a big picture view of how conservatives differ from liberals on most issues. We believe that as the voice of government gets larger, louder, and stronger, the voice of individual americans becomes smaller and less relevant. Weve all heard of the stereotypical cushy government job that you cant get fired from, and where very little actual work gets done. Our fear is that as more and more people rely on the government for education, housing, healthcare, and even employment, that same attitude of mediocrity will creep throughout the country, and turn us from the most productive nation in the world, to just another european-style lack-luster country.

Yes, there are some areas where it makes sense to have a strong, central government, such as for the defense of the nation, immigration, and the FAA, but we believe that in most cases, making the decisions closer to home, or even in our homes, as opposed to far away in Washington, makes more sense.

Since coming into office, President Obama has put forth policies that will result in a huge growth in government, and has done so at a pace that leaves little time for debate, and discussion of alternative ideas. In less than a year, President Obamas policies would have us completely transform huge areas of the US economy, including healthcare, transportation, housing, and the financial markets. Its not just the scope of these changes that has conservatives reeling, its the speed with which theyve been concocted, and the political sleight-of-hand thats been used to push them into power.

Let me finish by reiterating that President Obama is my president, and your president, and I respect him and believe his intentions are sound, but if youre wondering why there are so many protests and demonstrations against the democrats right now, let me tell you that its not racism. Its not some far-fetched notion that his allegiance lies with some other country or religion. Its that individual people in this country are rocking back on their heels at the transformations that are being suggestion and the rapidity at which they are to be enacted. This country works best when individuals voices are heard loud and clear, and our fear is that those voices will soon be drowned out by the constant drone of big government.

President Obama is not evil, or bad, he simply has a different philosophy of what makes this country great, and what will lead it towards prosperity. If I can ask you to do one thing after hearing to this brief response, its to listen to both sides of todays issues. Really listen, and use your own common sense to come to an opinion. And after that, make it your voice thats heard, loud and strong. Thanks for watching.

  • he bought the election

  • I'm sorry Ben but you are being too rational...I'm afraid you're gonna get bad raitings since what you said there is too complicated for your average sisterfucking redneck hick that thinks the president is a nazi communist (oxymoron) that will kil your grandmother and turn the white house in to a barber shop...

  • Thank you. Very eloquent.

  • well, you just lost me as anyone who would watch your electronics reviews. you should post this on a separate youtube channel.

  • serious douche

  • 1) shut the damn music off after first minute. (2) I tuned in for funny. Where's the funny?

  • It's a speech about staying in school and doing your best. What exactly is a Republican response going to disagree with? Are you saying Republicans don't believe in staying in school or doing your best, and therefore need an official rebuttal to clarify how they differ with the President's entirely nonpolitical address?

I doubt you're saying that, but I'm just trying to put it in perspective. Why there is no rebuttal for the minority party: No one gives a shit.

  • bout damn time i saw a video that doesnt contain, barack obama is < or equal to hitler

  • cphellp, you have obviously never watched a State of the Union address, or any other nationally televised presidential speech. The minority party is always given a chance to provide televised rebuttal, in order to maintain a balanced presentation of the issues. This is only one of the problems with Obama's speech to America's schoolchildren, but it is easily the most damning.

Congrats, Ben, on a well-spoken message. Not as strong as strong as I would have delivered, but well-done nonetheless.
