Sorry about the lighting, it was getting dark when I did this. There has been some discussion as of late in the woodgas yahoo group http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/WoodGas/ about compressing woodgas in a tank for later use. It is not worth the cost of compression let alone without specialized equipment to monitor and systems to purify the gas, it is a terrible idea to trust corrosive chemicals inside of steel containers under pressure as it will probably lead to a tank rupture in a short time. Just to put the question to rest though, I have just done this little demonstration for those who are thinking of doing it. NO I didn't put it under high pressure though, I only filled up an air mattress with GOOD CLEAN KNOWN woodgas. RE-READ that last sentence. I have a very reliable little gasifier and know when it is producing GOOD CLEAN GAS. First, I used a vacuum to suck all of the air out of the mattress. Then I flared the woodgas before filling to be sure the gas started good and then when the air mattress was full, I disconnected it and flared my woodgas at the BLOWER to be sure it was still producing good gas. That way, there is little chance any oxygen got into the mattress and in the event of a backfire which my little engine doesn't do anyway, I won't blow myself up or at the least burn off all of my hair and damage my ear drums. Once full, I ONLY piped the air mattress into the carb and started the engine. I did NOT try to flare the mattress for the aforementioned reasons above and remember, there were no flashback safety valves in this one either. It took 2 minutes to fill up and ran for 5 minutes which was longer than I expected but I didn't have a load on the genset. So if anyone feels like trying anything like this, don't! There, that was my disclaimer.

  • Wouldnt the motor running keep you awake? Wouldnt the mattress become uncomfortable as it was deflated by the motor? I think I will stick with air in my mattress when I go camping.

  • @ChrisPCrunchy Well, no, first you have to sleep with great ear plugs. Then what you do is run two air mattresses on top of one another and as one is being deflated by the engine, you fill the other one with the exhaust from the engine. Your bed will be warm and toasty too :)

Thanks for the humorous comment Chris, we can all use a good laugh now and again.

  • This is probably in the top 10 on woodgas tech. Can you include a yahoo group link? This goes great with the backfire arrestors we are currently discussing.

  • Oh yeah, I'll add the yahoo link to the description. True, a screen or layered steel like a marine carb flash suppressor would do the trick.

  • Wow, interesting stuff here! Thanx! Looks a bit dangerous but the comment here about running a propane stove off of it is interesting. Probably better to run such a stove outside. Probably makes alot of CO, but maybe not.. keep testing everyone and be careful! Thanx for the inspiration! Can you let the woodgas sit in the balloon for a period of time and then use it? I wonder if it somehow breaks down and loses its BTU potential over time?

  • Bad Ass!!!

  • nice

  • also knowpub youtube channel showed wood gas in a balloon where he hooked up the balloon to a propane stove and the stove ran for hours!

  • wow somebody finally post a video of woodgas in a balloon well air matress! last vid of wood gas i seen in a balloon from knowpub channel..do another vid and lets see the run time on that baby!

  • great way to store the gas with out pressure. beats and innertube!

  • that is really cool!
