More than 35 million Americans go to their doctors each year for gastrointestinal-related issues, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Although many of these visits include treatment for serious conditions such as recurring polyps, inflammatory bowel disease and stomach ulcers, the majority of cases involve ordinary problems.
According to Richard Friedman, MD, a gastroenterologist with Saint Josephs Hospital, gastroenterology is the specialty that diagnoses and treats conditions anywhere in the digestive tract starting with the mouth and esophagus. Common conditions like irritable bowel syndrome often go undiagnosed and untreated because many people are too embarrassed to talk about them, Dr. Friedman says. In actuality, talking with your doctor is the best thing you can do because the sooner you know whats wrong, the quicker you can fix it and feel better.
