As Puccini had a really amazing notion of rythm, a lot of people didn't understand Recondita armonia very well. Pavarotti did. He focused a lot in happy arias.
What you've got with ___|___| marks the best rythm marking the aria. There's an almost unperceptible pause or a slow-down (and timpani) in those ||, and __ marks the normal singing. It is matching with the singing, in the beggining.
