"The King", a male Mute Swan, aggressively defends his lake against any potential threats. This swan and his mate have two fairly mature cygnets and share the lake with many birds including other swans but he takes exception to some of them. (A male swan is called a "Cob" and a female a "Pen".) He had chased this other swan most of the morning and had moved on to chasing others when he saw it return again. Usually the raised wings, double leg stroke swimming motion and aggressive posture are enough to drive off "rivals", and we have seldom seen actual physical confrontations on the lake. The reason he stands on his opponent is likely instinctive since in the water he would try and get on top of the opponent and drown him. This one made it to land.

Before you ask, the other swan did get away, after human intervention, but he was last seen coming back for another round. And so it goes... they'll sort it out one way or the other.

  • All I can say is wow, I have regularly seen swan aggression toward geese, and one nearby lake is home to about 2 dozen in the fall- good feeding there I presume. Yours was behavior i hadn't seen before thanks for sharing it.

  • The king really had it in for that 1 swan! That's funny when that goose thinks the 2 swans are after him, & he takes off. He must've been relieved to see what was really happening!

  • I love watching swans go about their business, gracefull and elegant, but can also be belligerant and hostile toward a perceived threat. All part of nature.

  • That swan was smart to run to land. Because he could have been drowned in the water by the two of them.

  • Yeah Mute swans are very territorial.I would have stepped in and grabbed that swan out of the way... if humans can help then they should.

  • Lol, I enjoyed your video and description! Good job! :)

  • true

  • yes but nature has to happen...
