  • 'northforge' - The use of the wooden 'troll hammers' is a good method with the type of lacy bloom typical of low air volume smelts (seen a lot in Europe). Most of the time our blooms are pretty dense, even as they come out of the furnace. Metal sledges are more effective there. Your suggestion *is* good advise - I really should add a couple of wooden sledges to the equipment pile.

  • If you are truly interested, see my draft paper :

'Working towards an Icelandic Viking Age Smelt - Based on the remains at Hals'

The video is just one of a series of experimental smelts working to develop a practical method based on the archaeological remains.

  • Should start with a hardwood mallet first then work into a steel hammer after it starts to consolidate.

  • Is this Icelandic iron?

If so where did you get it from ?

  • is this in iceland or is the material just from here?
