Xenosaga: Episode I 2001 Trailer

I was asked to put this up awhile back, after Episode III came out, but I forgot about it. =p

This is one of the first trailers released by Namco and Monolithsoft for Xenosaga Episode I back in 2001. What's really important about this trailer is that it shows that several plot elements that show up in Episode II, were actually supposed to be included in Episode I.

Nearly all the content within the last minute or so of this trailer was cut from the final release of Episode I and instead incorporated into Episode II or III.

For instance:
- The sword fight between Jin and Margulis.
- The silver robot shown standing up was never seen in the final release of Episode I. Many believe this to be an early design for either Omega or Proto Omega, which made its debut in Episode II.
- The footage of the child rocking back and forth never appeared in Episode I. The boy's name is Abel, and while he does show up in Episode I, it's only for about a second at the end of the game. He's shown stacking building blocks in a most unusual fashion, not rocking to and fro. Abel actually doesn't make a significant appearance until Episode III.
- The conversation between Jin and chaos on the porch.

The two facts that are important to note are the conversation between Jin and chaos and the fight between Jin and Margulis. Both of these events occur either partway and late in the game, leading many to believe that all of the content before and between these events was supposed to apart of Episode I, not II.

Of course, all this is matter of debate, and something for the hardcore Xenosaga fans to scratch their heads about. =)

I remember first seeing this trailer and being so excited about another Xeno game. I'm one of the very few people(apparently) who prefers Xenosaga to Xenogears, largely because of Xenogears' not-so-great second CD. But anyway... you can really tell they wanted to invoke memories of Xenogears, with the first scene ever shown being so reminiscent of the Eldridge attack at the start of Xenogears.

Whether you prefer the original Xenogears, or the newer Xenosaga, a sad fact that all fans of the genre must face is that none of the games were released as intended. Tetsuya Takahashi himself stated that Xenogears wasn't finished upon release. This resulted in the "quick-to-finish" storytelling format that the second disc had.

Xenosaga itself didn't fair much better, as the originally planed six episodes spanning three stories was cut to three episodes telling only one story. (Shion's)

I hear that XenoSaga itself was to be part 3 of the six episode series, with XenoGears as part 5.

Due to budget restraints, among many other things, part 1 and 2 were condensed into the long opening cutscene at the beginning.

You're a little mixed up here. It's a common mistake to believe that Xenogears and Xenosaga are related, but actually they have nothing to do with each other. Both were intended to be a six part series, but plans just never worked out for the development team. The team made Xenogears while working for Square (back before the Square Enix merger) and then made Xenosaga after leaving and forming Monolithsoft. Similar character designs were used mostly because of sentimental value.

wish this had come out in the UK and in PAL. Does anyone else want a Petition for this series in PAL apart from me? We only got Ep. 2 here, i thought is wasn't crap...well due to that they showed the trailer for Ep. 1 but never realesed it, in PAL. Anyone want a PETITION FOR PAL?

No, basically, due to deadlines episode one was cut short. It was originally supposed to end with the destruction of old militia to my knowledge.

Much of episode two is a dumbed down version of the remainder of Ep.I.

Episode Two was originally supposed to be everything from the fight with albedo, the missin year, and episode 3.

There would be 4 more games, that will sadly never see the light of day T_T

Yeah, that's true -- I just felt the Xenosaga overall(not just the story, but as a game) was superior. That's not to say I didn't like Xenogears, the first cd is rpg bliss.

I'm glad with Saga, despite it not doing well, it was actually fairly "complete" though. It would've been really disappointing if it ended after 2 or after 1(had 1 encompassed episode 1 and 2 as intended).

Also depressing, for me at least, is that the series ends right when they perfect it; 3 was the best in the series IMO.
