These trains run through the countryside around Battambang in Cambodia. They are an incredibly simple design and as the name sugget are made of a considerable amount of bamboo, which gives great strength for little weight. They run on the old railway lines that were built by the French when Cambodia was still a colony. So who gets right of way? Well the rule is the train with the most passengers gets right of way. However if a train is carrying a motorbike it has right of way over a train carrying more passengers. However everyone seems to take it in their stride and help each other out in taking the trains off the tracks.

  • Are these lines abandoned or does the Cambodian railway operators 'turn a blind eye' to what is going on?

  • @NJPurling These lines have been abandoned for about 50 years I believe. However they are getting the railways up and running again. There is no way they could use the old rails but the may use the same routes and replace the rails. Not sure what will happen to the Bamboo Trains then...

  • Yes...real cool.

  • First class accommodation is situated towards the front of the train...

  • i was wondering how you guys were moving until i saw the motor...

  • omg it was that-that- EVIL COW IT STOPPED THE TRAIN BUT FAILED TO CRASH THEM....

  • THAT'S AWESOME. for ah minute i was worried that they might crash into each other and send all the lil kids flying, but they seem to have ah pretty good system down.THUMBS UP. NOW I HAVE AH REASON TO GO TO CAMBODIA.

  • @SailorAllan I'm sure seeing a distant car in person is easier than trying to pick it out from a two-dimensional display. They have perception of depth, we don't. Plus, the landscape looks relatively flat and straight, allowing one to see pretty far ahead.

  • uh, if the other "train" was moving toward you,I think it would be VERY hard to see- that was difficult to see when it was standing still like that. I wonder if they run at night ? Also, I would have a engine less motorbike with me just so I wouldn't have to move my "train".I bet the rules don't say the bike has to work !

  • Am I the only one that wants to ride on that too?

  • hehehe i guess from time to time there is a fight like robin hood and little jon on the bridge ...:-D

  • kool as hell that would be a blast
