(Click "more" for explanation and links... I've grown a bit obsessed with Hunger Games- NOT a sponsored video, which I always disclaim. I just found this series of best-selling books on Audible by relatively new author Suzanne Collins (who used to work on kids shows like Little Bear and Oswold). So I became curious about the author's inspiration and source, as well as the upcoming Lionsgate movie. I decided to make a video about it, and mention the fan websites and some favorite amateur homages & trailers. Again the books are "Hunger Games," "Mockingjay" and "Catching Fire."

The plot involve 24 kids (two from each of 12 known districts) being forced by a futuristic Capitol into a live televised arena where only one can survive. That sounds dark and dystopian, but there's also action and adventure, and at its heart it's a romance. I really think Collins is one of the most gifted story tellers of our time, so I'm bound to reread them as we await the film. She's got a knack for writing in great detail about battle, poverty, love, science and media. I almost never anticipated what was next, and only about 4-5 times in the 3 books did I want things to progress more quickly.

Collins dad grew up in the depression, was career Air Force, a military specialist, a historian, and a doctor of political science. Collins actually formed the concept when she was channel surfing between war coverage and reality television. The stories were also inspired by the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, and the stories are packed with Roman influences. But it's made contemporary with commentary on modern war, politics, reality TV and media, and a touch of Roman influence.

Fan Sites
There are loads of fan sites, but the standout is http://mockingjay.net/ and here on YouTube see http://www.youtube.com/mockingjaynet
Thanks to Kimmy in California, JD in DC, and Becca here in PA. I don't know 'em but I dig the site, which I found by googling.

Also see http://hungergamestopsites.com for a list of other fan sites. I'm sure more will sprout as the films approach.

Film:
Lionsgate The film is being shot this spring/summer, with a scheduled March 2012 release I doubt they'll make (it's also a less competitive less ideal time for a blockbuster, which is usuall summer). Gabriel Liotta is rumored to play Peeta Mellark, and the role of Katniss rumored to be Kick-Ass star, Chloe Grace Moretz.

Cool fan-madel trailer:

Awesome Katniss & rue scene:
Want to see a touching portrayal of one of the series most touching scenes (involving heroen Katniss Everdeen) and a young Rue, who reminds Katniss of her sister Prim: check out MainstayPro:

  • Excellent, Kevin! I'm in District 1 myself. I'd heard of the books but didn't get to reading them until I read the first two in my Teen Lit course last semester and then I read the third one over winter break with my girlfriend. I'm very interested to see how the movie turns out. I know that Hailee Steinfeld (Mattie from the Coens version of 'True Grit') is in the running for Katniss and I'd love to see her in the role.
