Children of a Lesser God - Part II

Children of a Lesser God is a 1986 romantic drama film that tells the story of a speech teacher at a school for deaf students who falls in love with a deaf woman who also works there. It stars William Hurt, Marlee Matlin, Piper Laurie, and Philip Bosco. The movie, directed by Randa Haines, was adapted by Mark Medoff, Hesper Anderson and James Carrington from Medoff's Tony award-winning play of the same name, which ran on Broadway from 1980-1982. Won Oscar: Actress in a Leading Role for Marlee Matlin and was nominated for more 4 Oscars (Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Supporting Role and Best Adapted Screenplay.

@gorramdoll I agree with you completely! A magazine I once read said that this movie is controversial in the Deaf community and now I see why. It doesn't seem to be *just* Hurt's character, though; it seems like all the hearing people in this movie are trying to change the Deaf ones. Ugh!

Additionally, Hurt dated Marlee Matlin for two years, and they lived together during 1986.

In her 2009 autobiographical book, I'll Scream Later, Matlin claimed their relationship involved considerable drug abuse and physical abuse by Willian Hurt...

I read about it in Sack's "Seeing Voices" and thought it would be more pro deaf but...what with him trying to get a deaf student to enjoy music in the next scene....I kind of agree with you. "Oh, I am such a great hearing guy, imparting to you the joys of hearing." **** ***!

Perhaps he regrets his behaviour later in the movie.

the video is kinda jumpy so it is hard sometimes to make out what sarah is signing. I really thank you for putting this Up I have been looking all over for it. ^_^
