There is no shortage of misunderstanding about ether start assistance for diesels.
Many tractors and heavy equipment diesel powerplants were equipped from the factory with ether start systems. Problems arise when ether is used on engines with glow plug starting systems. Even these can be ether started if the glow plug system is disabled. Ether could be hazardous on hot bulbs though, I'd worry about ignition in the crankcase on a 2 stroke. Ether doesn't kill diesels, people do.
It probably would work but, never ever use easy start, it ruins diesels. Once you have used it once it raises the compression slightly, bends the conecting rod just a fraction and runins you piston rings. Then the engine will not start without it.
Generaly these will start by bouncing off compression. However, this being a semi diesel, the above may not be such a problem as these have lower compression than a true diesel.

With enough primer spray it should start up just by bumping it off of compression...

Not actually a true diesel, but a hot-bulb oil engine.

Nice engine!
