My first year film at CalArts. Alternative working title: "Hughbert's Very Bad and Not Good Terrible Awful Unlucky Unfuntime Adventure".

The cat's name is Pluto, in homage of Poe's "The Black Cat" - inspired both by the cat in the book and my own one-eyed cat. All visuals were done by me, sound design and music by Jarred McAdams.

Film guidelines were black and white (though I got the drop of color okayed) and 90 seconds with no dialog.

  • wow this is sooo amazing girl!!!

    a question...

    do you like Tim Burton??

this looks a bit like this animation Vincent :P

  • @iiinicka Eh, other than being B&W I really do not see much similarity between the stop motion film Vincent and Hughbert. I do like Tim Burton's older works but I feel it tiresome that no one can do a dark work without being compared to him even if the films have nothing in common :)

  • what did u use to animate this?

  • @bugliee Paper and pencil

  • this is awesome! 8D

  • Evokes of Edgar Alan Poe's stories. Points to traditional too. It always cheers me up to see hand drawn animation. Very fluid on several points. Kinda reminds of Richard Williams' animation (at least to me). Bravo sir! Job well done.

  • Beautifully dark :]

  • @roseyroundtheedges I'm not the artist, but I believe she said in deviantART that she did it by hand (with possibly minor tweaks in Photoshop). Anyway there were linearts and still shots scattered across her gallery.

  • Oh, neat stuff here. I'm dying to learn how to animate 2D like this.

What software program did you use (if any)?

  • This is a very entertaining mini film. I enjoy the dark atmosphere and the style. The animation all together is pretty fluid and has professional quality. Wonderful job!

  • @maliciousmaladies Exactly, why does Burton get all the credit for anything dark and macabre, people say that about my work all the time and I have to try hard to not eviscerate them. If anything the great Edward Gorey deserves a mention, and before him Poe.

I love your work by the way. It's so wonderfully macabre :) I'll be looking out for you in the future.

  • @maliciousmaladies I couldn't agree more, why does Burton have a monopoly on the strange and macabre? Before him it was the great Edward Gorey, who in my opinion is still one of the greats of macabre art. I love your work btw, absolutely marvelous :)

  • Theif!!!! you stole our title, or maybe you copied it? Seriously though i don't mind but check out our Hughbert video you might like it, very different style of animation!
