Chestnut-backed Chickadee Nest - San Francisco, CA (Eureka Valley) - May 28, 2009

A pair of Chestnut-backed Chickadees has taken up residence in our backyard nest box. Nest-building took place over two days, beginning on May 12, 2009. The first egg appeared on May 14; on May 16, the female laid another two eggs; by the morning of May 17, five eggs were in the nest. The female takes great pains to conceal the eggs prior to leaving the nest; she flits her wings to move feathers over the eggs.
