the original...the original...the one and only. nadal uber forehands. what is this? many casual tennis fans have the misguided perception that rafael nadal is only about spin. the forehand of nadal is always noted for its fantastical spin rate, sometimes in excess of 5000 rpm (the typical ATP professional having an average spin rate somewhere in the range of 2200-2900). those fans might be led to believe that nadal's ball, while freighted with massive spin and heaviness, cannot cut through the court the same way a forehand hit by the flatmasters -- james blake and robin soderling come to mind -- can. they would be dead wrong. nadal chooses for the most part to hit with spin as his playing style, court position, and overall temperament have organically evolved with that sort of direction. however, it is not outside of nadal's capability to sit back and blast laser-like forehands from the baseline if the situation dictates, as this video clearly demonstrates. also, at 2:43, nadal's only backhand winner in the clip, was struck at 146 kph. those scoring at home will note this as 91 mph. not bad for a 17-year old.

  • so much more pace! so different from today

  • Its almost strange to see this nadal I wouldn't say I'm shocked just a little stunned. He hits the ball so clean when struck flat it boggles my mind why he doesn't hit like this in the present. But it may come down to his way of training and developing his game off of clay

  • What's that? No windmill forehand?

  • Time to switch back Nadal!

  • @Petsmar02 Old comment, but because it was Fed that took the game back then, not Djokovic. He turned his forehand from a universal weapon to a specific anti-Fed forehand.

  • If he played like this he might have a chance against Djokovich.....otherwise its not looking too good for him :(

  • first time i see nadal hitting trough the ball. impressiv

  • CRAZY NADAL

  • i was almost 2min into this vid when i realized that this was all one match. cool forehands!

  • @LOcoast2coast lol i mean he has 9 of them right now.,..so...

  • Nole does not give him chance to attack like this. Rafa is now gentle as lamb.
