Eight mastoidectomies are performed resulting in optimal drilling with no injuries to facial canal and semicircular canals. This technique may represent an adjunct in the armamentarium of the trainees that are not familiar with the anatomy of the temporal bone and eventually of neurosurgeons facing lesions that require the removal of various degrees of the mastoid.
This information has been taken from The Utilization of Fluorescine for Identification and Preservation of the Facial Nerve and Semicircular Canals for Safe Mastoidectomy, a manuscript that can be read here: http://journals.lww.com/neurosurgery/Fulltext/2010/01000/Utilization_of_Fluor... . It was submitted by corresponding author Ossama Al-Mefty M.D. of the Department of Neurosurgery at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
