I can remember the first time I knew what a racial slur was. For the longest time I thought the "N" word or things like that were just bad words that people said to each other when they got mad. Like sh*t. I didn't know that it was a specific insult, just that it was a bad word and not to say it. What changed that for me was Harry Potter and the word "Muggle". That term was when I discovered racial stereotypes and slurs, and for that reason, I could never read those books.
I've lived my whole life in a part of the U.S. that's so racially diverse that I actually feel odd when I'm in a completely Caucasian group of people (yes, I'm white) - like there are points of view missing from the conversation. Say what you will, there are physical, mental and cultural differences, and those difference are important. Tolerance is more than saying or not saying words, you have to LIVE with people to understand them, and they have to WANT to be understood.
@bildo1977 Islamic extremist terrorism really began when Jimmy Carter was president. We don't hear his voice at all in the opening credits of "Homeland." Hollywood again is attempting to redefine something or revise history. We should all be cautious when Hollywood and/or the mainstream media is trying to tell us anything.
What bothers me about the PSA is the use of two Caucasians. One is a homosexual, and the other has Down's Syndrome. There is no Caucasian in the PSA that says, "It's not okay to call me a cracker." (or peckerwood) This being done deliberately. Hollywood does this all of the time. In the opening credits of "Homeland" on the Showtime network, you can hear audio of the previous presidents and news reports that deal with terrorism. It starts with Reagan announcing a series of strikes against enemies.
LOL, here's what I love about this subject. I cannot count the # of times I've had converstations with white friends of mine who say they don't understand what the big deal about racial slurs is. Yet they are instantly offended by words like retard, bitch or c&*t, the fact of the matter is we can't make people care about other peoples feelings because they have no context for how those words affect the person when they are being used in hatred. BTW it is NOT ok for black people to use the N word
@greenyodadude You know what he meant. NO ONE uses the word Lame to mean physically disabled. The meaning has changed and you know it. You are just choosing to get offended over nothing.
Anyway I agree with Matthew about this. Intention is what matters.
Another video that I am 100% agreed with. BTW, I think only one version of Huck Finn has been neutered. I know the publication I read (it has the same cover as the one in your video) has the n-word in there.
Also, that Glee commercial actually kind of offended me. The fact that they would compare - no, EQUATE - the word retard to a slur used against black people for hundreds of years just gives me one more reason to hate that show. (I'm black, BTW)
@Maderlock Of course "fag" can alter it's meaning but was I said, the meaning that we have today (e.g. annoying person) is linked to the meaning "annoying, effeminate homosexual" because you originally wanted to point out, that the person you call a fag (who might be straight OR homosexual) is acting in an "unnatural way", the meaning today is the same, you just don't use it specifically against homosexuals but against everyone.
@YaleBreaker i dislike arrogance sure, but is there really any way to bring up the point that life is meaningless without it turning it into a flame war?
